ABB has achieved a major milestone by delivering over 10 gigawatts (GW) of automation solutions for renewable energy plants in India. This achievement comes after starting with a 100-megawatt project seven years ago. ABB’s IoT-based PLC solution has been used nationwide for over 300 renewable energy projects.

The PLC-based SCADA system from ABB collects and analyses real-time data to keep plants running efficiently with minimal maintenance. It allows operators to monitor and understand key aspects of plant performance, offering full visibility into operations. Part of ABB’s Drive Products, this SCADA solution reduces the cost and risk of running renewable energy plants.

With rising energy needs, India is boosting its renewable energy efforts to reduce fossil fuel use. It aims for net-zero carbon emissions by 2070 and 500 gigawatts of electricity capacity from non-fossil sources by 2030. Renewable energy plants using ABB’s solution can cut carbon emissions by over 24 million tons annually, helping the country transition to cleaner energy.

Renewable energy systems often involve complex safety calculations to handle large amounts of data for monitoring temperature, pressure, and other factors. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are crucial for managing the variable availability of renewable energy by storing power and ensuring a steady supply. At the same time, it’s important to monitor and control these systems safely.

ABB’s secure SCADA system uses its advanced AC500 PLC to track important parameters and manage plant operations according to Indian grid code standards. It also creates custom reports with necessary analytics to meet the varied needs of renewable energy plants, including those with a mix of wind, solar, and BESS.

In India, the solar and wind sectors are leading the growth in renewable energy capacity. As of July 31, 2024, the installed solar power capacity was about 87 GW, and wind power capacity was around 47 GW, according to the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. ABB has a significant presence in the solar market and works with major EPC firms to build projects throughout India.
