On June 18, 2024, ABB India announced significant energy savings achieved through its IEC LV Motors across Indian industries. Over the past five years, ABB India’s installed base of LV Motors has saved approximately 500 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of energy annually. This amount of energy savings is equivalent to the annual energy consumption of Sikkim, a northeastern state in India.

Rapid Adoption of IE3 and IE4 Motors

The sale of IE3 and IE4 high-efficiency motors has shown notable growth, particularly with IE4 motors witnessing a surge of more than 100% in 2023. India’s proactive efforts to promote energy efficiency have extended beyond metropolitan areas, with tier 2, 3, and 4 cities and MSME sectors increasingly adopting these high-efficiency motors across various industries.

Regulatory Impact on Motor Efficiency Standards

Since 2018, India has required low-voltage motors to meet at least IE2 efficiency standards under Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS). This regulation has spurred Indian industries and MSMEs to adopt higher-efficiency motors like IE3 and IE4. Despite this progress, many older, less efficient motors still in use pose a significant barrier to achieving energy savings. Replacing these older or rewound motors with energy-efficient models can lead to substantial energy conservation.

Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

IE3 motors have approximately 20% lower losses than IE2, and IE4 motors reduce losses by around 20% compared to IE3. However, IE3 and IE4 motors comprise only about 18% of total motor production. Transitioning to these higher-efficiency motors is critical. For instance, replacing IE2 motors with IE3 could save over 1 terawatt-hour (TWh) of energy annually, and upgrading to IE4 could save up to 2.1 TWh annually. This shift is essential for India’s efforts to achieve net-zero goals, especially since motor-driven systems consume over 70% of electricity in industrial settings.
