Air India joins hands with the Delhi Metro Railway Corporation (DMRC) and Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) and introduces a check-in facility for international flyers. The check-in and baggage-drop facility, already available for domestic passengers, allows convenient traveling and marks an upgrade in passenger services.

Current facility:

For domestic flyers, IGI airport provides check-in and baggage-drop facilities at the metro station. This allows outstation flyers to explore the city or run errands baggage-free. Meanwhile, their baggage gets loaded through an advanced automated infrastructure created by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and Delhi International Airport. This facility was available at 2 metro stations- New Delhi Metro Station and the Shivaji Stadium Metro Station (both on the Airport Express Line). Air India’s counter for baggage check is available from 6 A.M. to 9 P.M.

Extension of the Facility:

On 4 June 2024, Air India issued a statement which stated that this facility will now be open for international passengers as well. However, it is only operational at 2 Delhi Metro Stations – New Delhi and Shivaji Stadium, as of now. The timings for the same would, now, be 7 A.M. to 9 P.M. Check-in for domestic flyers can be done 12-2 hours prior to the departure, and for international flyers can be, now, done 4-2 hours prior to the departure.

Benefits:

The airport metro of the Delhi Metro network connects the railway station with the international airport. This airport metro lies on the Orange Line of the Delhi Metro Network and is called the Airport Express Line. Metro Trains in Delhi run at a frequency of every 10 minutes, based on which, passengers can reach Terminal 3 of the Delhi airport in just 19 minutes. This will improve the passenger experience by ensuring a quick and hassle-free journey. Apart from this, it will also reduce traffic near the Airports and the passenger congestion at airports.

Conclusion: Air India’s efforts to utilize the efficiency of the Delhi metro add to its mission to improve customer service and ensure operational efficiency. Moreover, the collaboration of Air  India, DMRC, and DIAL, highlights the importance of cooperation for innovative approaches.
