Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, born on October 15, 1931, in Rameswaram, India, was a renowned scientist and politician who served as the President of India from 2002 to 2007.

Kalam graduated from the Madras Institute of Technology in 1958 and joined the DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation). In 1969, he became the Project Director for SLV-III at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), where he led India’s first satellite launch vehicle, designed entirely by Indian engineers. He earned the nickname “Missile Man of India” for his significant contributions to India’s missile development programs in collaboration with DRDO.

  • He was appointed the Project Director for SLV-III at ISRO, leading the successful launch of the Rohini satellite in July 1980, which expanded India’s space program significantly.
  • He led the missile project, assembling a talented team to enhance India’s defence capabilities.
  • He served as the Prime Minister’s Chief Scientific Adviser from 1992 to 1999 and was also the Secretary at DRDO.
  • In 1998, he co-designed a low-cost coronary stent, known as the “Kalam-Raju Stent,” and developed the “Kalam-Raju Tablet” for rural healthcare in 2012.
  • He played an important role in the Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998, asserting that such capabilities would act as “weapons of peace” to deter potential threats.
  • He was elected as the 11th President of India in 2002 with support from various political parties.

Dr. Kalam delivered some of the most memorable speeches at the United Nations and the European Union. After completing his presidency, he became a guest lecturer at the University of Delhi, where he wrote extensively and supported youth development initiatives.
