Asia Index Private Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), has introduced the BSE Select IPO index, designed to measure the performance of newly listed companies on the BSE. The index will specifically track stocks that have entered the market through initial public offerings (IPOs) or via spin-offs and demergers.

Inclusion Criteria & Weightage Limits

The selection of stocks for the BSE Select IPO index is done by: full market capitalization, liquidity, and a minimum listing history of three months. To maintain balance and prevent any single stock from dominating, the weightage of individual stocks in the index is capped at 5%. This approach will have a diverse representation of companies within the index.

Index Characteristics

The BSE Select IPO index was established with a base value of 1,000, with its first value date set on May 30, 2014. It comes in for quarterly reconstitution and rebalancing to balance the most up-to-date market conditions. This makes it a well-tested tool for tracking the performance of new companies across a variety of sectors.

Investment Strategies

This index will help support multiple investment strategies. It is well-suited for passive strategies like exchange-traded Funds (ETFs) and Index Funds. Additionally, it can be used for benchmarking Portfolio Management Services (PMS) and evaluating the performance of Mutual Fund Schemes and other portfolios. By offering insights into the performance of emerging companies, the index has investment strategies and provides data for understanding the markets.

Global Context & Relevance

India’s IPO market has been active in 2024, ranking among the top three globally in terms of funds raised and the number of companies listed, showing the growing appeal of India’s equity markets.

Conclusion: The launch of the BSE Select IPO index shows the dynamism of India’s equity markets, offering a framework to assess growth opportunities presented by new listings. By serving as a tool for investors and fund managers, the index will help in shaping global investment strategies.
