Bajaj Auto, India’s third-largest motorcycle manufacturer, made history on Friday by unveiling the Freedom 125, the world’s first commercially available compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered two-wheeler. Launched in Pune under a separate brand for Bajaj’s bi-fuel motorcycles, the Freedom 125 targets the crucial entry-level segment, a market space where nearly half of all motorcycles sold in India belong.

With an expected starting price of ₹90,000 (ex-showroom), the Freedom 125 aims to disrupt the market by offering a more economical and eco-friendly option to budget-conscious riders.

At the launch event, Bajaj Auto’s CEO, Rajiv Bajaj, emphasised the motorcycle’s significance, calling it “an avatar of freedom and freedom from petrol”. He expressed his vision for India, stating, “India can show the world how we can move away from petrol and diesel and move towards cleaner fuel.”

This sentiment aligns with the company’s earlier remarks, where Executive Director Rakesh Sharma highlighted the extensive development efforts behind the Freedom 125.

“Almost 70% of the one million per month market of motorcycles has some level of sensitivity to fuel economy,” he further explained, emphasising the potential of the Freedom 125 to cater to a significant segment of riders seeking cost-effective transportation.

The Freedom 125 boasts a 125cc engine and features a conventional fuel tank alongside a CNG cylinder positioned underneath. To ensure a comfortable ride, the motorcycle is equipped with telescopic front forks and a mono-link suspension system. Braking duties are handled by a disc brake at the front and a drum brake at the rear.

The arrival of the Freedom 125 marks a significant milestone in the Indian two-wheeler industry. With its focus on fuel efficiency and environmental friendliness, this innovative motorcycle has the potential to revolutionise the way people commute in India and potentially influence the global motorcycle landscape.
