The Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) initiative, which was inaugurated in 2015, remains a fundamental aspect of India’s strategies aimed at tackling gender inequality and enhancing the well-being of girl children. Recent developments have underscored notable growth and obstacles within the program’s structure.

The BBBP is fully funded by the Central Government

The primary metrics for measuring the scheme’s impact and gauging its progress include the enhancement of the Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB) and the Gross Enrolment Ratio for girls at the secondary education level. According to provisional data from the Health Management Information System (HMIS) of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW), the SRB has risen from 918 in 2014-15 to 930 in 2023-24.

According to the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE +) data from the Department of School Education and Literacy, the national gross enrollment ratio for girls at the secondary education level rose from 75.51% in 2014-15 to 79.4% in 2021-22, encompassing rural regions.

Multi-Sectoral Interventions under BBBP

Recognising that the multi-sectoral interventions under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) initiative necessitate coordinated efforts across various ministries and departments, the Ministry has acknowledged the need to tackle the challenges faced by states and union territories with lower engagement in activities, including those for the International Day of the Girl Child. To facilitate this, an Operational Manual for BBBP has been issued, which contains a comprehensive and well-considered Activity Calendar aimed at promoting continuous involvement of girls, their families, and their communities throughout the year.

BBBP Monthly Calendar

Each calendar month has a theme assigned to it based on any important national or international date falling within that month. Most of the months have an identified convergent ministry/department, with which focused efforts are undertaken to achieve the objectives of BBBP in that month. For example, 11th October is the International Day of Girl Child.

Weekly focus areas within a particular month have also been suggested along with the relevant activities. The idea is to cover all aspects of the holistic development of the girl child and their ecosystem.
