Bank of Baroda has emerged as the preferred lender for a significant ₹5,000 crore loan deal with Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), a state-owned steelmaker. BoB’s competitive bid of 7.49% for a five-year loan, linked to the 364-day treasury bill, secured the deal over other major public and private sector banks.

Key Highlights

  • Bank of Baroda secures ₹5,000 crore loan deal with SAIL
  • A competitive bid rate of 7.49%
  • Loan to fund SAIL’s capital expenditure and working capital requirements
  • The strategic decision by BoB to prioritise market share
  • Lower margin on the loan compared to previous deals
  • Reduced risk associated with lending to a state-owned company

The loan will be used to fund SAIL’s capital expenditure and working capital requirements. Given SAIL’s government-owned Maharatna status and minimal risk profile, the deal attracted keen interest from various lenders. However, BoB’s aggressive bid, well below the competition, secured the deal.

The interest rate offered by BoB is notably lower than its average yield on advances, indicating a strategic decision to prioritise market share and relationship building with SAIL. While the loan carries a lower margin compared to previous deals, the reduced risk associated with lending to a state-owned company makes it attractive for banks.

The acquisition of this loan deal reinforces BoB’s position as a leading lender in the Indian market. The bank’s ability to offer competitive rates and secure significant deals demonstrates its strength and expertise in the banking sector.
