On December 16, 2024, the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50 closed in the red, echoing weak sentiment across Asian markets.
The 30-share Sensex declined by 384.55 points (0.47%) to settle at 81,748.57, moving between a high of 82,116.44 and a low of 81,551.28 during the session. Similarly, the NSE Nifty50 dropped 100.05 points (0.40%) to close at 24,668.25, with an intraday high of 24,781.25 and a low of 24,601.75.
Out of the 50 stocks in the Nifty50, 36 closed in the red. Titan, TCS, Hindalco, Adani Ports, and BPCL were the biggest losers, with declines of up to 1.93%. On the other hand, Dr Reddy’s Labs, IndusInd Bank, Bajaj Finance, HDFC Life, and Power Grid managed to gain, with increases of up to 1.90%. ITC ended flat, showing no significant change.
Despite weak performance in the benchmark indices, mid-cap and small-cap stocks stood out. The Nifty Midcap100 rose by 0.77%, while the Nifty Smallcap100 gained 0.64%, indicating better investor sentiment in these segments.
Sectoral indices showed mixed results. The real estate sector emerged as a strong performer, with the Nifty Realty index jumping 3.10%, driven by gains in Oberoi Realty, Prestige Estates, and Macrotech Developers. Other sectors like Media, Pharma, and PSU Banks also ended in the green. However, sectors such as Financial Services, FMCG, IT, Metals, and Oil & Gas faced losses, falling by up to 0.97%.
As of December 16, 2024, at 04:02 PM, Brent Crude was trading at $73.94, down by 0.74%.
