On December 18, 2024, benchmark indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50 ended the day in the red.
The Sensex fell by 502.25 points (0.62%) to close at 80,182.20. Throughout the day, it traded between a high of 80,868.02 and a low of 80,050.07. Similarly, the Nifty50 declined by 141.21 points (0.58%) to end at 24,198.85, with its day’s range being 24,394.45 to 24,149.85.
Broader markets mirrored the weak performance, with Nifty Midcap100 and Nifty Smallcap100 falling by 0.64% and 0.87%, respectively.
Out of the 50 stocks in Nifty50, 33 closed lower. Tata Motors, Power Grid, BEL, JSW Steel, and NTPC were the biggest losers, with declines of up to 2.92%.
On the other hand, 17 stocks gained, led by Dr Reddy’s Labs, Trent, Cipla, Wipro, and Reliance Industries, which saw increases of up to 2.48%.
Most sectoral indices ended lower, with banking stocks being the worst hit. The Bank Nifty, PSU Bank, and Private Bank indices dropped by up to 1.92%. The Nifty Financials, Media, and Consumer Durables indices also declined, losing up to 2.24%.
IT, Pharma, and Healthcare were the only sectors to end in positive territory, offering some relief in an otherwise negative trading session.
As of December 18, 2024, at 03:40 PM, Brent Crude was trading at $73.68, up by 0.67%.
