A dividend is an amount that a company distributes out of its profits among its investors as a reward for being a shareholder. Dividends act as incentives to investors to invest their money the company’s stock.

Dividend distribution has a two-fold impact. On one hand, it helps increase the stock price in the short run as the additional cash income attracts more and more investors. On the other hand, it reduces the amount of capital available for reinvestment into the company for future growth.

As an investor, you can take a holistic look at a dividend stock, by checking not only the dividends paid, but also the fundamental strengths and weaknesses of any stock. Nevertheless, dividends are a positive gain for investors holding the stock, especially if they experience little or no losses in the stock price.

Let us now find out the list of upcoming dividend-paying stocks in Septmeber 2023.

How to Select the Best Dividend Stocks

Here are some of the key points to remember when considering stocks to buy based on their dividend payouts, among other things:

  1. Business fundamentals – The fundamentals of any stock should be your major focus, especially if you are a long-term investor.
  2. Excess debt – You should consider avoiding companies that have high debt that are showing signs of future cash crunch. You should thus look at the debt-to-equity ratio of the company before investing.
  3. Sector trends – It is important that you look at the sectoral and macroeconomic trends to understand the potential growth of the company’s revenues and stock price.
  4. Dividend yield – Dividend yield is the ratio of the company’s annual dividend payment per share to its current stock price. A higher dividend yield means you get a higher dividend for a particular amount of investment.
  5. Dividend payout ratio – It is the proportion of the company’s earnings that the company is paying out to its shareholders. If it is too high then that means the company is perhaps not reinvesting its earnings enough to grow itself.
  6. Consistent dividend history – Just because a company is paying a high dividend this year does not mean it can do so every year or quarter. Look at the dividends paid over time, especially if you are a long-term investor. A consistent dividend payout history is a strong indicator of stable financial health.

Note: In case a stock’s price has been falling consistently, it is important to check if the periodic dividend payments are enough to offset the capital losses in the same period.

Final Words

Dividend stocks are useful assets to help diversify your portfolio and earn regular income. You can use the dividend yield calculator to find out what is the level of dividend that you can earn from a particular amount of investment.
