New Delhi is gearing up to welcome some of the world’s most influential leaders for the G20 Summit 2023 this weekend. The delegates will be accommodated at the impressive Bharat Mandapam complex within Pragati Maidan. This top-notch convention centre will serve as the hub for diplomatic engagements, bilateral discussions, and various summit-related activities.

What is the G20 Summit? It is like a big meeting where leaders and important people from 19 countries and the European Union come together once a year. They talk about important global money and economic stuff. It’s a bit like a meeting of the world’s financial superheroes.

Here’s a glance at some of the confirmed attendees and their respective countries’ GDP as of 2022:

Country Name Country GDP (2022) Name of delegate
United States USD 25.46 trillion President Joe Biden
United Kingdom USD 3.152 trillion Prime Minister Rishi Sunak
Canada USD 2.13984 trillion. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
France USD 3.124 trillion President Emmanuel Macron:
Japan USD 5.177 trillion Prime Minister Fumio Kishida
Australia USD 1.67542 trillion. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese
Germany USD 4.504 trillion Chancellor Olaf Scholz
South Korea USD 1.66525 trillion. President Yoon Suk Yeol
South Africa USD 0.40586 trillion. President Cyril Ramaphosa
Turkey USD 0.9055 trillion President Recep Tayyip Erdogan

Notable Absences:

While the G20 Summit draws leaders from across the globe, it’s important to note some notable absences this year:

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin: Instead, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will represent Russia.
  • Chinese President Xi Jinping: China’s Premier Li Qiang will attend on behalf of Xi Jinping.

India’s Minister for External Affairs, S. Jaishankar, mentioned that these absences are not uncommon and will not hinder the negotiations for a consensus communiqué.

Nations Observing the Summit:

Apart from the G20 member nations, India has extended invitations to leaders from Bangladesh, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Egypt, Mauritius, Oman, Singapore, Spain, and the United Arab Emirates. Additionally, high-ranking officials from international organizations, including the United Nations, International Monetary Fund, World Bank, World Trade Organization, World Health Organization, and International Labour Organization, will also participate.

The G20 Summit 2023 is a significant event for India and it’s likely to be a key player in the discussions on these issues. We have a strong stance on the war in Ukraine and have been a vocal critic of Russia’s invasion. India is also a major player in the global economy and is well-positioned to contribute to the recovery. Additionally, India is a signatory to the Paris Agreement on climate change and is committed to taking action to address climate change.
