In a step towards greener industrial practices,  Vedanta group firm, Hindustan Zinc Ltd. (HZL), India’s top zinc producer and the second-largest worldwide, has kicked off a major renewable energy project. Teaming up with Serentica Renewables, a big name in the renewable energy game, Hindustan Zinc is now powering its Rajasthan operations with clean energy

The company has initiated the first phase of renewable energy integration from Serentica Renewables’ 180 MW solar project in Bikaner, Rajasthan, which is now being used for HZL’s business units in the region.

Agreement & Capacity Expansion

Hindustan Zinc has entered into a power delivery agreement (PDA) with Serentica for a substantial 180 MW round-the-clock (RE-RTC) power supply which will majorly boost HZL’s renewable energy capacity, which previously included a solar power capacity of 40.70 MW, heavily reliant on conventional fuels for its remaining power requirements.

Environmental Impact & Goals

This project is expected to annually reduce approximately 0.45 million tonnes of CO2 emissions, aligning with HZL’s broader sustainability goals, it’s part of the company’s plan set in 2022 to reduce its carbon footprint by 50% by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 which has already yielded a 14% decrease in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to the base year 2020.

Hybrid Model & Future Plans

Serentica’s Bikaner power park, spread across 1,200 acres and costing approximately Rs.1,000 crore involves both solar and future wind energy installations. Akshay Hiranandani, CEO of Serentica Renewables, highlighted plans to expand and include wind energy, showing Serentica’s multi-location hybrid model.

Conclusion: In conclusion, the renewable power from Serentica helps across HZL’s business units as it not only reduces dependency on conventional fuels but also aids in decarbonizing operations. HZL’s Pantnagar Metal Plant already operates on 100% green power, and the company is deploying battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and 180 LNG vehicles in its logistics to further reduce emissions by 25% by 2030.
