On June 17, 2024, the ICAR-National Bureau of Soil Survey & Land Use Planning (NBSS&LUP), Nagpur, and Coromandel International Limited (CIL) signed an agreement. This partnership aims to improve how farmers in Maharashtra, especially in Vidarbha and Marathwada, manage their crops using soil tests.

NBSS&LUP will provide soil data, and Coromandel will offer effective nutrient management solutions. The goal is to enhance soil health, boost crop productivity, and support farmers through better coordination and research exchange.

During the MoU (memorandum of understanding) signing event, Dr N.G. Patil, Director of ICAR-NBSS&LUP, Nagpur, discussed the Bureau’s responsibilities and activities across its five regional centres. He emphasised their approach to providing farmers with tailored advice based on detailed land information from the Land Resource Inventory (LRI).

Representing Coromandel International Limited, Mr Sankarasubramanian S, Executive Director of Nutrient Business, underscored the importance of balanced nutrition management using soil test data to benefit the farming community. He wanted this collaboration to expand beyond Maharashtra and cover more regions across India. The aim is to utilise digital solutions developed by ICAR-NBSS&LUP to recommend optimal fertilisers based on specific soil conditions.

Project Implementation Details

The MoU allows Coromandel to introduce advanced nutrition and crop management practices in Maharashtra using soil information and farm advisories from ICAR-NBSS&LUP. The project includes demonstrations of nutrition tailored to specific sites and programs to raise farmers’ awareness.

The outcomes will validate Decision Support Systems (DSS) for mobile apps advising on crop selection and nutrient use. At the signing event, both organisations discussed collaborative efforts on scientific and farmer-focused issues such as drone-based research for precise farming, carbon farming, and climate-smart agriculture.
