The Indian aviation sector is soaring to new heights with ambitious expansion plans and a robust growth trajectory. Highlighted in the recent 2024 Budget, the government’s initiatives to expand the airport infrastructure and introduce new routes reflect an ever evolving industry. As domestic and international passenger numbers continue to skyrocket, this sector is set to become a significant player at a global level.
Fleet Expansions and Passenger Growth
In her 2024 Budget speech, the Union Finance Minister highlighted the impressive growth in India’s aviation sector. The government plans to expand the number of airports to 149 and introduce 517 new routes, targeting robust growth and improved connectivity. The number of domestic passengers have surged from 98 million in 2012-13 to approximately 202 million in 2019-20, with projections indicating that India will handle more than 500 million passengers by 2030.
ICRA, a leading independent investment information and credit rating agency, forecasts a net loss of Rs. 30-40 billion for the Indian aviation industry in FY2025. This represents a significant improvement from the Rs. 175 billion loss reported in FY2023. For FY2024, domestic air passenger traffic reached around 154 million, reflecting a year-over-year growth of approximately 13%. International passenger traffic for Indian carriers stood at about 2.968 crore, with a year-over-year growth of around 24% during the same period (Source: ICRA Airlines May 2024).
New Aircraft Arrivals and Fleet Expansions
This growth is mirrored by the substantial fleet expansions underway. India is set to receive a significant influx of new aircraft this year. IndiGo plans to add approximately 60 planes to its fleet, while Air India Express is expected to receive around 50 new aircraft. Other airlines, including Air India, Vistara, and Akasa Air, are also expanding their fleets in 2024. Major manufacturers, such as Boeing and Airbus, are ramping up production to meet the increased demand following the COVID-19 pandemic.
Air India has recently added several widebody Boeing 777s and narrowbody A320 family jets to its fleet, with plans to acquire an additional 20 planes in 2024. Vistara is set to increase its fleet size to 70 aircraft as part of its expansion strategy. Akasa Air, India’s newest low-cost carrier, has taken delivery of two Boeing 737 MAX planes, bringing its total fleet to 22. The carrier plans to add over 15 more aircraft in 2024 and has placed an order for 76 MAX aircraft, with potential plans to order up to 150 planes from Boeing in the near future.
Challenges and Grounded Aircraft
Despite the impressive growth, challenges persist. Over 160 airplanes are currently grounded across various Indian airports, with IndiGo facing the most significant issues due to ongoing problems with Pratt & Whitney engines. These operational hurdles highlight the need for continued focus on resolving technical issues to maintain the momentum of the sector’s expansion.
India’s aviation industry is experiencing an unprecedented growth phase, driven by substantial fleet expansions and increasing passenger traffic. The planned addition of new aircraft and expanded airport infrastructure underscores the sector’s potential to meet rising demand and enhance connectivity. However, challenges such as grounded planes and engine issues highlight the need for continued focus on operational efficiency. As India navigates these complexities, the industry’s future remains promising, with opportunities for further development and innovation. Staying informed about these trends will be crucial for stakeholders and investors looking to capitalize on India’s burgeoning aviation market.
