India kicked off its latest auction for 5G airwaves on Tuesday, with a total value exceeding ₹96,000 crore. This auction marks a significant step towards establishing a robust 5G infrastructure within the country.

Reduced Spectrum Offering

While the auction encompasses 8 different frequency bands, the total amount of spectrum available (10.5 GHz) is considerably lower compared to the 72 GHz offered in the country’s inaugural 5G auction in July 2022.

Telecom Giants To Bid for Crucial Frequencies

Major telecom players—Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea (Vi)—are all participating in the auction. Each company is eager to secure the necessary radio frequencies to deploy and enhance its 5G mobile services. The government collected a record ₹1.5 lakh crore during the previous spectrum auction in August 2022.

Bidding Landscape

  • Reliance Jio emerges as the frontrunner, having submitted the highest earnest money deposit of ₹3,000 crore, granting them the potential to bid for the most spectrum.
  • Bharti Airtel deposited ₹1,050 crore, while Vodafone Idea placed a bid of ₹300 crore, suggesting a more strategic approach focused on specific acquisitions. Analysts expect Vi to prioritise the 26 GHz band to potentially reduce spectrum usage charges.
  • The 3300 MHz band is expected to garner significant interest from both Jio and Airtel due to its ability to deliver 5G services with lower upfront costs.
