India is poised for a substantial increase in power generation capacity, with a projected addition of 3,37,900 megawatts (MW) by 2032. Union Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik outlined this ambitious target in a recent Rajya Sabha session.

The country has already witnessed impressive growth in power generation over the past decade, with a 79.5% increase in capacity from 248,554 MW in March 2014 to 446,190 MW in June 2024. This translates to an addition of approximately 214,237 MW in the last ten years.

To achieve the 2032 target, the government plans a diversified approach to power generation. Thermal power will contribute 80,000 MW, while hydropower and nuclear power are expected to add 25,010 MW and 14,300 MW, respectively. Additionally, pump storage plants (PSPs) are slated to contribute 50,760 MW. Renewable energy sources will also play a crucial role, with 1,43,980 MW from solar power, 23,340 MW from wind power, and 510 MW from small hydro projects.

These planned additions underscore India’s commitment to meeting the growing energy demands of its population and industries while transitioning to a cleaner energy mix.

About Power Sector

India has one of the world’s most diverse power sectors. Power generation sources include viable non-conventional sources, including wind, solar, agriculture, and home waste, as well as conventional sources like coal, lignite, natural gas, oil, hydro, and nuclear power. As of January 31, 2024, India had 182.05 GW of installed renewable energy capacity (including hydro), accounting for 42.3% of the country’s total installed power capacity.

As of April 30, 2024, solar energy accounted for 82.63 GW of total energy. Wind power accounted for 46.16 GW, biomass for 10.35 GW, small hydropower for 5.00 GW, waste to energy for 0.59 GW, and hydropower for 46.93 GW.
