India has achieved a significant milestone in its renewable energy journey, surpassing 200 GW (gigawatts) of total renewable energy capacity as of October 10, 2024. According to the Central Electricity Authority, the current renewable energy-based electricity generation capacity stands at 201.45 GW. This accomplishment highlights India’s commitment to clean energy and its ongoing efforts to create a greener future.

This milestone is the result of years of dedicated work to harness the country’s abundant natural resources. From extensive solar parks to wind farms and hydroelectric projects, India has developed a diverse renewable energy portfolio. These initiatives have not only reduced reliance on fossil fuels but have also enhanced the nation’s energy security. With the addition of 8,180 MW (megawatts) of nuclear capacity, non-fossil fuel-based power now constitutes nearly half of India’s total installed electricity generation capacity, signalling a strong move toward global clean energy leadership.

Overview of India’s Renewable Energy Landscape

India’s total electricity generation capacity has reached 452.69 GW, with renewable energy accounting for a substantial portion of the energy mix. As of October 2024, renewable energy generation capacity is at 201.45 GW, representing 46.3% of the nation’s total installed capacity. This marks a significant transformation in India’s energy landscape, showcasing the country’s increasing reliance on cleaner, non-fossil fuel sources.

Solar power leads the charge with 90.76 GW, crucial to harnessing India’s abundant sunlight. Wind power follows closely with 47.36 GW, leveraging the vast potential of the country’s coastal and inland corridors. Hydroelectric power contributes significantly as well, with large hydro projects generating 46.92 GW and small hydro adding 5.07 GW, utilizing India’s rivers and water systems for sustainable energy.

Biopower, which includes biomass and biogas, adds another 11.32 GW to the renewable mix. These bioenergy projects are vital for converting agricultural waste and organic materials into power, further diversifying India’s clean energy sources. Together, these renewable resources are reducing dependence on traditional fossil fuels and advancing the nation toward a more sustainable and resilient energy future.
