Provisional data released by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas reveals a mixed picture of fuel consumption in India for the month of June. While petrol and ATF (Aviation Turbine Fuel) witnessed growth, diesel sales experienced a slight decline.
Industry-wide petrol consumption increased by a healthy 4.2% year-on-year in June. This growth can be attributed to factors like the recent holiday season, which typically sees a surge in leisure travel, and the ongoing trend of petrol-powered vehicles dominating new car sales in India.
Similarly, ATF sales witnessed a significant increase of 8.7% compared to June 2023. This rise aligns with the holiday season’s increased demand for air travel.
Data from state-run fuel retailers, controlling approximately 90% of India’s gas stations, presents a slightly different perspective. Although petrol sales grew by 3.6% year-on-year, diesel sales dipped by 1.3% in June. This divergence suggests a potential shift in market share dynamics.
State-run companies also experienced a slower growth rate (4.3%) in ATF sales compared to the industry average (8.7%). This implies that private players might be capturing a larger share of the aviation fuel market.
Diesel, accounting for nearly 40% of India’s total fuel demand, primarily caters to long-haul transportation, mining, and agricultural sectors. The marginal decline in diesel sales in June might indicate broader economic trends or a potential shift towards alternative fuels in these sectors.
When examining the first two months of the current fiscal year (April-May), the picture becomes clearer. Diesel sales grew by a modest 1.9% year-on-year during this period, whereas petrol sales saw a more robust 8% increase. ATF consumption also experienced a notable 15% growth, while LPG sales rose by 6.7%.
India’s fuel demand patterns suggest a growing preference for petrol and a potential slowdown in diesel-dependent sectors. Rising ATF sales reflect the increasing importance of air travel. State-run fuel retailers need to adapt to these changing trends to maintain their market share, while private players might see an opportunity to gain a foothold. As the year progresses, it will be interesting to see how these trends evolve and their impact on India’s fuel consumption landscape.
