The Ministry of Coal (MoC) is taking decisive action to ensure a reliable power supply for Indian citizens during the peak demand period. Through a multi-pronged approach, they have achieved record-breaking coal stockpiles at thermal power plants, exceeding 45 million tonnes (MT) as of June 16, 2024. This represents a significant 31.71% increase compared to the same period last year.

Key Strategies for Enhanced Coal Supply

  • Increased Production: Coal production has reached an all-time high, with cumulative production at 207.48 MT on June 16th, reflecting a 9.27% growth year-over-year. Coal India Limited (CIL) has been a major contributor, recording a 7.28% increase in production compared to last year.
  • Efficient Logistics and Dispatch: The MoC has implemented effective logistical arrangements, ensuring smooth and adequate coal delivery. Dispatch to the power sector has grown by 5.71%, reaching 180.35 MT.
  • Inter-Ministry Collaboration: A dedicated Sub-Group comprising representatives from MoC, Ministry of Power, Ministry of Railways, and power-generating companies fosters efficient supply chain management.
  • Improved Transportation Infrastructure: The Ministry of Railways has boosted daily railway rake availability by 10%, averaging 428.40 rakes per day. Additionally, coal evacuation through coastal shipping has grown significantly, utilising Dhamra and Gangavaram ports alongside Paradip. Railway network upgrades, particularly on the Son Nagar-Dadri route, have significantly improved rake turnaround times.

Meeting the Growing Demand

This proactive initiative addresses the surge in coal-based power demand, which has grown by 7.30% in the current fiscal year compared to the same period last year.

Conclusion

The Ministry of Coal’s unwavering commitment to coal production, transportation, and inter-agency collaboration has resulted in robust coal stockpiles. This accomplishment ensures a stable and efficient coal supply, guaranteeing uninterrupted power for Indian citizens during the peak demand period.
