InterGlobe Aviation Limited, doing business as IndiGo, is an Indian low-cost airline headquartered in Gurgaon, Haryana, India. In India, it is the largest airline by passengers carried and fleet size, with around 60% of the domestic market share as of April 2024. Japan’s private carrier Japan Airlines(JAL) has signed a new codeshare partnership with Indigo.

JAL and Indigo deal

This codeshare partnership allows an airline to book its passengers on its partner carriers and provide seamless travel to destinations where it has no presence. With IndiGo, India’s leading budget airline, expanding travel options between Japan and India. Currently, JAL operates daily flights from Tokyo Haneda to Delhi and three weekly services from Tokyo Narita to Bengaluru. This collaboration strengthens the airlines’ networks, providing customers with greater flexibility and convenience when travelling between the two nations. 

This deal is now set to help JAL offer its passengers connections on IndiGo’s extensive domestic network, adding 14 new destinations to JAL’s route portfolio. This expansion includes major cities such as Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and more, linked to JAL’s flights from Delhi and Bengaluru, strengthening its presence in the Indian market. 

Management on this deal

Abhijit Dasgupta, Senior Vice President of IndiGo, highlighted the growing popularity of Japan among Indian travellers and the importance of seamless connectivity for supporting trade, commerce, and tourism. Ross Leggett, Senior Vice President at JAL, emphasized the significance of this partnership in meeting the rising air travel demand and expanding travel opportunities for customers of both airlines and countries.
