Jain Irrigation Systems (JISL) has made a significant breakthrough in the coffee industry. As the first company globally to develop a tissue culture protocol for coffee varieties, JISL has partnered with the Coffee Board of India to commercialise high-quality, disease-resistant coffee plants. This collaboration is poised to revolutionise coffee cultivation.

JISL’s expertise in crop enhancement, demonstrated with successful tissue culture banana, pomegranate, and sweet orange plants, has led to improved yields, higher farmer incomes, and superior quality exports. The company’s announcement on August 22, 2024, of seven high-yielding tissue culture coffee varieties (Robustas and Arabicas) marks a decade of dedicated research and development. These varieties, licensed by the Coffee Board of India, are now available for commercial production and sale.

Tissue-cultured coffee plants offer numerous advantages. They address the Indian coffee sector’s challenges of ageing plantations and limited-quality planting material. Jain Tissue-Cultured Coffee Plants are elite mother plants bred for high yield, exceptional cup quality, and balanced canopy architecture. These plants are true-to-type, disease-free, robust, and genetically uniform, ensuring optimal performance when integrated with Jain Precision Farming Packages.

To further expand the reach of its innovative coffee farming solutions, JISL welcomes contract propagation of tissue-cultured coffee plants in bulk quantities from institutions, planter associations, and individual coffee estate owners.

Jain Irrigation remains committed to serving farmers and transforming agriculture through innovative technology. With a focus on making the world a better place for farmers, the earth, and the future of food, JISL’s tissue-cultured coffee plants offer a promising solution for enhancing coffee production and prosperity in India.

About the innovation, Mr Ajit Jain, Managing Director of Jain Irrigation, said, “We are extremely proud to introduce to the world an elite coffee- a disease-free, genetically uniform and high-yielding variety – bringing prosperity to Indian coffee farmers and putting Indian coffee on the global map.”

On the occasion, Coffee Board Secretary and CEO KG Jagadeesha said, “For the first time in the world, we have standardised the tissue culture technology for coffee in India. The coffee plants multiplied using the tissue culture protocols have been evaluated in the fields for the past few years. They are performing much better than the regular varieties. As part of the MoU, Jain Irrigation will multiply and sell the identified coffee plants to growers directly while paying a royalty to the Board.”
