JSW Steel, India’s leading integrated steel company, has reported a consolidated crude steel production of 6.35 million tonnes for the first quarter of FY 2024-25. While this represents a slight dip of 1% year-on-year and 6% quarter-on-quarter, it’s important to note this is due to planned maintenance shutdowns. Despite this, JSW Steel’s Indian operations maintained a robust capacity utilisation rate of 87% in Q1 FY25, demonstrating their continued production strength.

This result reflects the company’s impressive growth trajectory. Over the past 30 years, JSW Steel has transformed from a single manufacturing unit into a national powerhouse. Today, it boasts a combined production capacity of 36.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) across India and the USA, with an additional 6.5 MTPA under commissioning in India.

This relentless expansion is set to continue, as JSW Steel plans to reach a total capacity of 43.5 MTPA by September 2027. Notably, their Vijayanagar plant in Karnataka holds the distinction of being India’s largest single-location steel-producing facility, currently operating at a capacity of 17.5 MTPA.

Looking Ahead

JSW Steel is not solely focused on production volume. Recognising the critical role of sustainable practices, the company has outlined ambitious decarbonisation goals. Most notably, they aim to achieve a 42% reduction in CO2 emissions from their steel-making operations by 2030. Looking even further ahead, JSW Steel is committed to achieving net neutrality in carbon emissions for all directly controlled operations by 2050.

Further demonstrating its dedication to a cleaner future, JSW Steel envisions complete reliance on renewable energy to power its steel-making operations by 2030. These bold aspirations showcase its leadership in the critical energy transition within the steel industry.

JSW Steel’s sustainability targets extend beyond carbon reduction. Their vision encompasses achieving “no net loss” in biodiversity at operating sites by 2030. Additionally, they aim to significantly improve air quality and reduce water consumption across all operations while maintaining their commitment to Zero Liquid Discharge. By pursuing these holistic initiatives, JSW Steel aspires to be a leader not just in steel production but also in responsible and environmentally conscious manufacturing.
