On June 24, 2024, Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) informed in a stock exchange filing that the company’s Power Transmission & Distribution (PT&D) vertical has secured a domestic order to build a grid-connected 185 MW Solar PV Plant along with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a multitude of MWh capacity.

The Solar PV plant located in Kajra, Lakhisarai district, represents a pivotal component of Bihar’s strategy to embrace renewable energy solutions. This initiative is crucial in combating climate change and addressing the escalating energy demand. The plant’s integration of a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a capacity of 254MWh is a significant advancement.

The BESS plays a dual role by storing solar energy during periods of low demand and discharging it during peak demand, thereby optimising energy utilisation. Moreover, it effectively mitigates fluctuations in generation, ensuring stable frequency regulation and voltage support across the grid. Notably, the BESS is equipped with black start capability, enabling rapid re-energization of the grid following any outage.

Speaking of this significant order win, Senior Vice President and Head of Renewable Strategic Business Group of the Power Transmission & Distribution, Mr A Ravindran, said, “This is a welcome addition to our Renewable EPC portfolio of 18 GWp (Gigawatt Peak) cumulative capacity, comprising solar and wind generation projects already commissioned and in the making. On the Battery Energy Storage System front, we handle more than 1.5 GWh of storage capacity. This rich experience has made us the EPC partner of choice for developers globally.”

The Whole-Time Director and Senior Executive Vice President (Utilities) of Larsen & Toubro, Mr T Madhava Das, stated, “Our expertise in providing renewable energy solutions encompasses a vast array of technologies involved in ground-mounted and floating solar generation, grid-scale and distributed energy storage systems, efficient transmission and distribution networks and allied digital energy solutions. Our footprint in facilitating clean energy extends to multiple geographies, including India, the Middle East and the Far East, enabling our customers to develop GW-scale projects economically with safety, quality and timely delivery.”
