Larsen & Toubro (L&T), a player in India’s infrastructure and engineering sector, has secured a defense contract from Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) to construct two fleet support ships (FSS) for the Indian Navy valued between Rs.1,000 crore and Rs.2,500 crore. These specialized vessels provide logistical and material support to naval task forces at sea. L&T and HSL building fleet support ships together aim to meet strict timelines and boost the economy. 

Scope & Specifications

The fleet support ships under this contract are designed to be over 220 meters long with a displacement of approximately 45,000 tonnes, making them among the largest in the Indian Naval fleet that will provide essential logistics and support at sea. This aligns with India’s vision of strengthening its maritime capacity through internal shipbuilding, reflecting the ethos of ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’.

Construction at Kattupalli Shipyard

L&T will undertake the construction of these vessels at its greenfield shipyard located at Kattupalli, near Chennai. This facility, known as one of the most modern in the country, is equipped with globally benchmarked technology, ensuring high-quality construction and adherence to stringent maritime standards.

Expertise & Expansion

Since entering defense shipbuilding in 2010, L&T has delivered over 70 vessels, highlighting its ‘Make in India’ capabilities and engineering prowess. Additionally, L&T Semiconductor Technologies Ltd. has acquired SiliConch Systems Pvt. Ltd. for Rs.183 crore, demonstrating expansion of its technological footprint across various sectors.

L&T’s renewable energy arm has also secured big orders to construct two gigawatt-scale solar PV plants in the Middle East, highlighting its diversified business approach. As L&T continues to strengthen its presence across critical sectors, including defense and renewable energy, it reaffirms to drive India’s growth story forward.
