On December 9, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the LIC Bima Sakhi Yojana, a visionary initiative by the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) aimed at empowering rural women. This scheme seeks to address the dual objectives of livelihood generation and expanding insurance awareness in underserved areas. With an ambitious target of enrolling 1,00,000 Bima Sakhis within a year, the program aligns with LIC’s commitment to promoting social welfare and financial inclusion.

Empowering Women and Bridging the Insurance Gap

The LIC Bima Sakhi Yojana is designed to empower rural women by offering them opportunities to work as insurance agents, paving the way for financial self-reliance. Participants in the program will benefit from a fixed stipend for the first three years, combined with commission-based earnings. Women are expected to earn a monthly stipend starting at ₹7,000 in the first year, reducing to ₹6,000 in the second year, and ₹5,000 in the third year. This financial model ensures stability as they establish their careers.

Additionally, the initiative addresses the lack of insurance penetration in rural India, contributing to the growth of the insurance sector in previously underserved regions. Performance-based commissions provide an added incentive, further motivating participants to excel in their roles.

Who is not Eligible?

While the scheme is inclusive in its intent, certain eligibility restrictions apply:

  • Relatives of existing LIC agents or employees, including spouses, children (biological, adopted, or stepchildren), parents, siblings, and immediate in-laws, are not eligible for this scheme.
  • Retired LIC employees and ex-agents seeking reappointment are also excluded.
  • Existing agents cannot apply under this scheme.

These criteria aim to ensure fairness and prevent potential conflicts of interest, keeping the focus on empowering new entrants, particularly rural women, in the insurance sector.
