Muhurat trading is a tradition followed on the Indian stock exchanges when a special trading window of one hour is open during the day of Diwali.

What is Muhurat Trading?

Muhurat is a time, according to Hindu astrology, which is considered auspicious to start something new or good. Muhurat plays a significant role in all major events of our lives. On Diwali, traders all over India come together to trade or invest money for the one-hour time.

The Indian stock exchanges remain closed on Diwali but are only open for one hour for the Muhurat Trading session. Muhurat Trading 2022 will happen on October 24, 2022.

On average, the stock exchanges remain open from 9:15 am to 3:30. But on Diwali, it opens only for one hour during Muhurat trading and typically consists of the following parts.

During block-deal sessions, buyers and sellers agree to buy/sell securities at a fixed price and update the exchange.

Pre-opening session

The pre-opening session lasts only for eight minutes to determine the equilibrium price.

Muhurat trading session

Call Auction session
