Recent Surge in the Nifty IT Index

The Nifty IT index has emerged as a top performer in Monday’s trade, witnessing significant gains throughout July. With a notable 8.5% increase so far this month, the index has reached new heights. On Monday, it hit a record high of 39,567, surpassing the previous peak of 39,446 set on January 4, 2022, before cooling off slightly.

Catalysts for the Rally

The recent surge was fueled by India’s largest IT services company, TCS, which reported strong results after market hours on Thursday. This led to a sharp upward movement in TCS’s stock, propelling the entire Nifty IT index by nearly 2,000 points on Friday. Additionally, HCL Tech reported its results after market hours on Friday and reacted positively on Monday, becoming the top gainer on the Nifty 50 index with over 3% gains.

Recovery from 52-Week Lows

The Nifty IT index has shown remarkable recovery, bouncing back 32% from its 52-week low of 29,339 recorded on July 28 last year. Since then, all constituents of the IT index have delivered positive returns, ranging from 13% to an impressive 104%.

Top Performers in the Nifty IT Index

Persistent Systems stands out as the top gainer, doubling in value with gains of 104% since July of last year. HCL Tech follows with a 44% increase. Index heavyweights like TCS and Infosys have also performed well, gaining 24% and 26%, respectively.

Underperformers in the IT Space

Despite the overall positive trend, not all stocks have kept pace. LTI Mindtree, a recent addition to the Nifty 50 index, has underperformed, gaining only 14%. Moreover, when considering returns from the previous record high to date, only three stocks—TCS, HCL Tech, and Persistent Systems—have delivered positive returns. Persistent Systems leads this group with a 98% increase.

Conversely, stocks like LTI Mindtree, Wipro, and Mphasis have declined between 20% and 26% since January 2022, continuing their trend of underperformance.
