NLC India Limited, a Navratna Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Coal, celebrated its 10th anniversary in renewable energy generation. This milestone underscores a significant journey that commenced on September 28, 2015, with the commissioning of a 10 MW solar photovoltaic power plant in Neyveli.

NLC India has been instrumental in transitioning the country from “Megawatts to Gigawatts.” The company became the first Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) to achieve 1 GW of renewable energy capacity, demonstrating its unwavering commitment to sustainable power generation.

While primarily known for lignite-based power generation, NLC India has expanded its portfolio to include 1,380 MW of solar power plants and 51 MW of wind power plants. Through these green energy initiatives, the company has generated 1234 Crore Units of Green Energy, preventing the emission of 1 Crore Tonnes of Carbon Dioxide. This not only contributes to a cleaner environment but also provides affordable and sustainable power to millions.

NLC India’s ambitious corporate plan envisions a renewable energy capacity of 10,000 MW by 2030. To achieve this goal, the company has formed new subsidiaries: NLC India Renewables Ltd (NIRL) for asset monetisation and NLC India Green Energy Ltd (NIGEL) to spearhead clean energy initiatives. Additionally, NLC India’s membership in the International Solar Alliance (ISA) highlights its global commitment to environmental sustainability within the coal sector.

NLC India has been at the forefront of renewable energy innovation. The company is actively pursuing projects in Solar and Wind power, Energy Storage Systems (ESS), Green Hydrogen, Pumped Storage Hydro projects, Lignite-to-Methanol conversion, mine overburden-to-sand initiatives, and critical mineral exploration.

With a current renewable energy capacity of 1.4 GW, NLC India is poised to quadruple this figure by 2030. Significant projects are underway in Neyveli, Barsingsar (Rajasthan), Gujarat, and Assam. A recent milestone was the signing of a 25-year power purchase agreement with Telangana state DISCOMs for 200 MW of solar energy at a competitive price under the Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU) scheme.

As NLC India continues its journey, the company remains committed to playing a pivotal role in achieving the Prime Minister’s goal of net zero by 2070.
