Trading on a Saturday? Here’s Why

Equity markets usually enjoy a break on Saturdays, but on May 18, 2024, the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) will host a special trading session. This unique event is designed to test the stock market’s disaster recovery systems and assess the preparedness for emergency situations.

What to Expect from the Special Session

In a circular, NSE announced that it will conduct two separate trading sessions on May 18, 2024. The first session starts at 9:15 AM and ends at 10:00 AM. After a break, the second session resumes at 11:30 AM and closes at 12:30 PM. The entire market will close at 12:30 PM.

The special trading session is not just a simple extension of the regular schedule. It involves a critical intra-day switch from the primary site to the disaster recovery site. This break between the two sessions is necessary to manage the technical aspects of the switch.

Price Bands and Trading Conditions for the Special Session

On May 18, 2024, NSE will implement specific price bands and daily operating ranges to maintain market stability during this special session:

  • Maximum Price Band of 5%: All securities, including those with derivative products, will be limited to a 5% price band. Securities already in a 2% or lower price band will continue with their respective bands.
  • Mutual Funds and Futures Contracts: All closed-ended mutual funds will also be under a 5% price band. Futures contracts will have a daily operating range of 5%.
  • No Flexing of Securities or Futures Contracts: This rule will apply throughout the special session, ensuring stability in trading.
  • Consistency Across Primary and Disaster Recovery Sites: The same price bands and rules applicable at the start of the day will carry over to the disaster recovery site.

Preparing for Emergencies

The special trading session provides NSE with an opportunity to evaluate its disaster recovery infrastructure. This split-session structure allows for a test of the system’s ability to handle emergency scenarios and ensures that the market can continue to function even in the event of a crisis. The results from this special session will help NSE enhance its disaster preparedness measures.

Stay Informed and Trade Safely

If you plan to trade on May 18, 2024, make sure to keep these changes in mind. The unique structure and intra-day site switch may impact your trading strategy, so stay informed and approach the market with caution. This special session is a critical step toward improving the resilience of the Indian stock market
