On March 30, 2024, NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation) Ltd stated in an exchange filing that the company had permanently closed its Barauni Thermal Power Station Stage-I.

NTPC’s Total Capacity

The largest energy conglomerate in India, NTPC Ltd, stated that their thermal power station, which comprises 2 units of 110 each, is closed permanently, with effect from March 31, 2024.

The company said, “We wish to inform that the operation of NTPC Barauni Thermal Power Station Stage-I (2×110 MW) comprising of two Units (Unit 6 & 7) of 110 MW each (along with all Auxiliary systems except CHP, Switchyard, Ash Dyke and Township) shall be permanently discontinued w.e.f. 31st March, 2024.”

After the permanent closure of Barauni Thermal Power Station Stage-I, on April 1, 2024, NTPC stated in exchange filings about the declaration of Commercial Operational Date (COD) of other plants that come under the company.

NTPC stated, “We wish to inform that based on the achievement of approved norms and due approvals, Unit-2 of 660 MW of 1320 MW (2×660 MW) Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant (MSTPP) at Rampal, Mongla, Bagerhat of Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company (Pvt.) Limited is included in the installed & commercial capacity of NTPC Group w.e.f. 12.03.2024.”

Unit-1 of 660 MW Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant (MSTPP) had already been included in the installed and commercial capacity of NTPC Group w.e.f. December 23, 2022.

They mentioned that following successful commissioning and requisite approvals, Durgapur PP-III Unit-2, a 20 MW facility operated by NTPC-SAIL Power Company Limited, has been declared operational as of March 29, 2024.

In another filing, the company added, “Consequent upon successful commissioning and due approvals, second & last part capacity of 80 MW out of 150 MW Chhattargarh Solar PV Project in Bikaner, Rajasthan of NTPC REL a step-down subsidiary of NTPC Limited through its wholly owned subsidiary NTPC Green Energy Limited, is declared on Commercial Operation w.e.f. 29.03.2024.” The company further said that the first part capacity of 70 MW of the Chhattargarh Solar PV Project in Bikaner has already been declared on commercial operation w.e.f. February 21, 2024.

With this, the total installed and commercial capacity of the NTPC group has now become 75,958 MW.

On April 1, 2024, the share price of NTPC Ltd opened at ₹339.00, touching the day’s high at ₹341.40, as of 11:32 AM on the NSE.
