Introduction

ONGC Videsh Limited (OVL), a prominent player in the international oil and gas sector, has recently announced a significant acquisition. This move underscores the company’s commitment to enhancing India’s energy security by expanding its global asset portfolio. Let’s dive into the details of this acquisition and understand its implications.

The Acquisition Deal

ONGC Videsh Limited signed a definitive Sale Purchase Agreement (SPA) to acquire a 0.615% Participating Interest (PI) in the Offshore Azeri Chirag Gunashli (ACG) oil field located in Azerbaijan. Additionally, OVL will acquire a 0.737% share in the Baku Tbilisi Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline company through its wholly-owned subsidiary, ONGC BTC Limited. The total investment for these acquisitions is up to USD 60 million.

Expanding Existing Holdings

These acquisitions are not OVL’s first venture into the ACG oil field. The company already holds a 2.31% PI in the ACG field and a 2.36% share in the BTC pipeline. This latest investment further solidifies OVL’s position in the region.

Overview of the ACG Oil Field

The ACG oil field, operated by BP since 1999, is a super-giant offshore field located in the Caspian Sea. The field has been developed in phases, with the latest addition being the Azeri Central East production platform, commissioned in early 2024. Other partners in this venture include SOCAR, MOL, INPEX, Exxon, Turkiye Petrolleri AO, and Itochu. The contract for the ACG field extends until December 31, 2049.

The Strategic Importance of the BTC Pipeline

The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline plays a crucial role in transporting oil from the ACG field and condensate from Shah Deniz across Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Türkiye. This pipeline connects the Sangachal terminal on the Caspian Sea’s shores to the Ceyhan marine terminal on the Turkish Mediterranean coast, facilitating efficient oil transportation from the region.
