RailTel was established in September 2000 with the aim of developing a comprehensive broadband, telecommunications, and multimedia network across the nation, as well as upgrading the train control operations and safety systems of Indian Railways. The RailTel network extends through approximately 5,000 stations nationwide, encompassing all significant commercial hubs.

In the first order, the company stated that it had obtained a work order from the Employees Provident Fund Organisation for MPLS Services spanning 140 locations, as per a purchase order issued by the EPFO, which amounts to ₹16,22,32,280. The completion date for this contract is set for March 31, 2027.
In a separate development, the company has secured a work order from South Central Railways for a memorandum of understanding between SCR and RCIL for the provision of EPC Core Infrastructure for 4G LTE-R across 523 route kilometres in the Secunderabad Division, amounting to ₹13,34,19,779.
The project is expected to be completed by 4 December 2027. Both orders were received on 6 December 2024 and were officially announced on 7 December 2024.

RailTel Corporation of India has reported a 6.58% increase in standalone net profit, reaching ₹72.64 crore, alongside a 40.78% surge in revenue from operations, totalling ₹843.49 crore for Q2 FY25 compared to Q2 FY24.
