The story behind Tata Motors’ successful buyout and turnaround of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is marked by a past incident that humiliated Ratan Tata and his team. Back in 1999, Tata Motors was struggling with its passenger vehicle division, particularly with the Tata Indica, and considered selling this division to Ford Motors, which previously owned JLR.

During a meeting in Detroit, Ford officials expressed interest in purchasing the division but were dismissive. They told Tata’s representatives, “You don’t know anything. Why did you even start a passenger car division?” They clearly thought they were doing Tata a favour by even considering the deal.

After that difficult meeting, Tata’s team returned to India. Years later, in 2008, Tata Motors successfully acquired Ford’s JLR division for $2.23 billion. Ford Chairman Bill Ford acknowledged the deal’s significance, stating, “You are doing us a big favour by buying JLR.”

This acquisition marked a significant turnaround for Tata Motors, which has since strengthened its presence in the global car market and now generates a large portion of its revenue from Ratan Tata Jaguar Land Rover.
