A social media post recently went viral, claiming that the Indian government had raised the retirement age for central government employees to 62. However, this is not true, as confirmed by the Press Information Bureau (PIB).
The PIB clarified that the viral post was fake and that the central government has not made any changes to the retirement age for its employees. The government’s official stance remains that there are no such proposals under consideration.
In August 2023, the government confirmed in the Lok Sabha that there were no plans to change the retirement age. Union Minister of State for Personnel, Jitendra Singh, reiterated this on August 9, 2024. He also mentioned that over the past 3 years, 122 government officers were given compulsory retirement based on service rules, but no policy changes were planned regarding the retirement age.
The government emphasised that any reviews regarding retirement are part of efforts to improve efficiency within the public sector, not to alter retirement policies.
