RITES to Bolster Bangladesh’s Railways with 200 Broad Gauge Passenger Carriages

On May 20, 2024, RITES Limited, a leading Indian engineering consultancy firm and the export arm of Indian Railways signed a significant contract with Bangladesh Railways. The agreement entails the supply of 200 Broad Gauge (BG) passenger carriages valued at approximately $111.26 million (₹915 crore). Notably, this project is funded by the European Investment Bank (EIB), signifying international backing for improved railway infrastructure in Bangladesh.

This contract extends beyond mere carriage delivery. RITES will leverage its expertise to provide comprehensive support throughout the project lifecycle. This includes collaborating on the design of the carriages and ensuring they meet Bangladesh’s specific requirements. Additionally, RITES will offer crucial spare parts support to facilitate smooth maintenance and operation of the carriages in the long run. To ensure a seamless transition, the contract also includes training programs for Bangladesh Railways personnel on the operation and upkeep of these new carriages.

The project timeline spans 36 months, encompassing both the supply and commissioning phases. Following a successful commissioning, a 24-month warranty period will ensure continued support from RITES. This comprehensive approach underscores RITES’ commitment to delivering not just rolling stock, but a reliable and sustainable railway solution for Bangladesh.

This contract reinforces RITES’ position as a key partner in Bangladesh’s infrastructure development journey. Building upon its past successes in supplying locomotives and passenger coaches (including 120 BG LHB type coaches), RITES continues demonstrating its commitment to the “Make in India, for the World” vision.
