On May 30, 2024, Schaeffler India introduced a pioneering initiative to support underprivileged youth in the emerging field of electric vehicle (EV) maintenance.

This is a collaborative venture between Schaeffler India and Don Bosco Training Centre in Pimpri Chinchwad, Pune. It is part of the Schaeffler Technical Enhancement Programme (STEP). Inaugurated by Andreas Schick, Schaeffler’s Chief Operating Officer, it reiterates the global parent’s affirmation to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives and Schaeffler India’s focus on imparting technical skills in the automotive industry.

Dedicated to extending its innovative spirit to community service, Schaeffler India invests in the set-up and students to unlock the untapped potential of numerous underprivileged youth nationwide. The residential training centre will provide comprehensive six-month training to students aged 18-24, leading to certification from the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC).

On completion, the students may use their differentiated skills for opportunities in leading automotive companies and authorised dealerships for EV vehicle maintenance. The goal is to train 180 students by 2024.

The rigorous six-month training course will include modules on EV battery maintenance, computer numerical control (CNC) and automotive electrical and electronics. These modules would equip the students to qualify as mechanics of automotive electrical parts and electronics, EV service technicians, and CNC programmers.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Schaeffler India, Harsha Kadam, said, “This STEP Center will take Schaeffler India’s dedication to enable social inclusion and equal opportunities by empowering our future – the under-represented youth. Having spent years innovating in all aspects of Motion Technology as a trusted development partner for the country’s pioneering automotive companies, Schaeffler India is bringing its insights into the technology frontier of EV maintenance to the realm of skilling – the need of the hour for making our automotive industry future-ready.”
