On April 3rd, 2024, SJVN Limited, a leading hydropower company in India, signed a momentous Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology Patna (IIT Patna). This collaboration marks a significant step forward for SJVN, aiming to revolutionise their tunnelling projects through the power of advanced geological models. The ultimate objective of the company is to reduce time and cost overruns, ensuring smoother project execution and potentially decreasing financial burdens.

A key outcome of this partnership will be the creation of cutting-edge predictive analytics algorithms. These algorithms will predict possible hazards and offer early warning systems designed explicitly for tunnelling projects by utilising integrated geotechnical data. It is anticipated that taking such preventative steps will significantly reduce time and expense overruns during project implementation.

Chairperson and Managing Director, SJVN, Smt. Geeta Kapur said that the primary focus of the MoU is to develop cutting-edge methodologies which integrate diverse geotechnical data sources. These would include geological surveys, borehole data, geophysical measurements, and monitoring data from SJVN projects.

Furthermore, the collaboration delves into the intricate relationship between overburden (the weight of the earth above a tunnel) and deformation (changes in the tunnel’s shape). By meticulously evaluating this connection, SJVN and IIT Patna aim to enhance the design and selection of support systems significantly – the crucial infrastructure that ensures tunnel stability. This deeper understanding will translate to more robust and resilient tunnels, minimising the risk of unforeseen complications.

The MoU was signed in the presence of the Director (Finance), SJVN, Shri A.K Singh and Director, IIT Patna, Shri T.N Singh and other dignitaries were also present.

Looking ahead, SJVN and IIT Patna are poised to become pioneers in the field of tunnelling efficiency. By embracing sustainable development and technological excellence, this partnership promises to pave the way for a more efficient and cost-effective future for tunnelling projects in India.
