On September 4, 2024, Star Health and Allied Insurance Co. Ltd (Star Health Insurance), India’s largest retail health insurer, introduced the first insurance policy available in Braille. This initiative highlights Star Health Insurance’s dedication to inclusivity and accessibility, making it easier for visually impaired and blind individuals to access information and make informed decisions about their health and finances.

Additionally, Star Health has launched a diversity and financial inclusivity program to empower the 34 million visually impaired and blind people in India. This program offers income-generating opportunities by training and upskilling them to become health insurance agents with the company. The program allows them to work at their own pace in a comfortable environment, giving them greater control over their lives.

Mr Anand Roy, MD & CEO of Star Health Insurance, said, “We are pleased to announce the launch of ‘Special Care Gold’ policy in Braille. This is a significant milestone in our mission to deliver equitable access to health insurance across all segments of society. This policy transcends traditional insurance, embodying our commitment to ensuring that individuals with disabilities receive the comprehensive support and coverage they need. We aim to build a more inclusive insurance sector – and specifically the 34 million individuals in India that are visually impaired.”

Star Health Insurance’s commitment to accessible healthcare is reflected in the Special Care Gold policy, which ensures quality care for individuals with disabilities that are often overlooked. To support new agents with disabilities, Star Health Insurance offers fully funded exam preparation, including audio training and scribes for exams. A dedicated hotline has also been set up to provide ongoing support and address any concerns. This initiative is designed to offer marginalised communities the flexibility to work at their own pace from home, making it easier for them to generate income in a way that suits their needs.

The Braille version of the “Special Care Gold” policy document was developed in collaboration with the National Association of the Blind (NAB). The policy provides tailored coverage for individuals with 40% or more disability, including those with physical, sensory, or cognitive impairments, covering essential medical treatments and support services.

On September 4, 2024, the share price of Star Health and Allied Insurance Co. Ltd opened at ₹637.95, touching the day’s high at ₹645.25, as of 12:22 PM on the NSE.
