On July 17, 2024, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, through an exchange filing, announced that Suzuki Motor Corporation is committed to achieving a carbon-neutral world while preserving the joy of transportation. Their strategy focuses on minimising energy consumption throughout a vehicle’s lifecycle, from manufacturing and use to recycling.

Championing Lightweight and Safety

Suzuki’s expertise in compact, lightweight vehicles extends beyond fuel efficiency during operation. These vehicles require fewer resources and generate less CO2 emissions during production, contributing to a smaller environmental footprint. They plan to further refine their “HEARTECT” technology, a lightweight and safety-focused body platform, while exploring additional weight reduction techniques to minimise energy consumption throughout the manufacturing process.

Lean Battery Electric Vehicles and Hybrids

Recognising the diverse renewable energy sources and usage patterns globally, Suzuki is developing electric vehicles tailored to specific regions. Their “Sho-Sho-Kei-Tan-Bi” philosophy – emphasising small, efficient components – guides the design of these vehicles. This translates to compact electric motors and lightweight batteries, minimising energy consumption throughout the vehicle’s lifespan.

High-Efficiency Engines and Carbon-Neutral Fuels

Suzuki’s 2023 development of the Z12E engine, which achieves a remarkable 40% thermal efficiency, signifies its commitment to high-performance internal combustion engines. Looking ahead, Suzuki plans to introduce this engine globally and explore the use of carbon-neutral fuels and next-generation hybrid technology to further reduce vehicle energy consumption.

Software Defined Vehicles (SDVs) Optimised for Efficiency

Suzuki recognises the potential of SDVs and is developing “SDV right,” an affordable system that prioritises energy-saving features aligned with its “Sho-Sho-Kei-Tan-Bi” principles. It plans to offer seamless software updates through a combination of wired and wireless (OTA) options, ensuring user convenience. Cost reduction is achieved through hardware sharing and software reusability, making these SDVs highly desirable to consumers.

Embracing a Circular Economy for Easy Recycling and Disassembly

The current linear economic model, based on resource extraction, production, use, and disposal, contributes significantly to environmental concerns. Suzuki envisions a circular economy where resource consumption is minimised. They plan to design vehicles with disassembly and recyclability in mind, ensuring a more sustainable future for mobility.

By implementing these strategies, Suzuki aims to create a world where energy consumption is minimised throughout a vehicle’s lifecycle. This commitment to sustainability allows them to offer eco-friendly transportation options while upholding their core value – providing everyone with the joy of mobility.
