Tata Power Ltd, one of India’s largest energy companies, has acquired a 100% stake in ERES-XXXIX Power Transmission Ltd, a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) company focused on power transmission. The deal, valued at Rs.18.56 crore, was completed on November 14, 2024, following approval from the Ministry of Power.

What Does ERES-XXXIX Do?

ERES-XXXIX, created in March 2024, was set up to handle a large-scale power transmission project in Odisha. The SPV is responsible for developing a 190-km 765 KV double-circuit transmission line connecting Angul and Gopalpur. The project also includes a  765/400 KV GIS substation in Gopalpur, Bay extensions at Angul’s 765 KV AIS substation and a 12-km 400 KV double-circuit line linking OPTCL’s Gopalpur substation to the new GIS substation. The infrastructure will help improve power distribution in the region and is slated for commercial operations by December 2027.

Why This Matters for Tata Power

This acquisition aligns with Tata Power’s plans of building a well-connected power transmission network across the country. Projects like these fuel-efficient power supply, especially in regions with rising industrial and residential demand. Owning such assets also allows Tata Power to retain operational control and build long-term value.

What’s Happening in the Market?

While this acquisition adds value to Tata Power’s business, its stock performance has been under pressure, falling 12.5% in the last month due to broader challenges in the energy sector. The stock of Tata Power is trading at Rs.402, down around 1% today. Additionally, LIC recently sold a 2.02% stake in Tata Power for Rs.2,888 crore, reducing its holding to 3.88%.

Conclusion: While Tata Power is making calculated investments to expand its infrastructure, the energy sector remains volatile. The ERES-XXXIX project adds value to Tata Power’s portfolio, particularly in transmission, which is to support the country’s energy requirements. However, its financial performance in the coming quarters will be closely watched by the markets.
