On November 13, 2024, Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a key player in India’s renewable energy sector, announced the successful completion of the Omkareshwar Floating Solar Project. With a capacity of 126 MW, this project is now one of India’s largest floating solar installations. NHDC Limited awarded the project an EPC contract worth ₹596 crore to TPREL.
Located in Madhya Pradesh’s Khandwa district, the Omkareshwar Floating Solar Project powers the Madhya Pradesh Power Transmission Company Limited (MPPTCL). It is strategically placed between two hydroelectric reservoirs, Indirasagar and Omkareshwar. Despite challenges like fluctuating water levels, high winds, and tough site access, the project was completed in just 26 months.
The Omkareshwar project uses 213,460 bifacial glass-to-glass solar modules. It generates 204,580 MWh of energy each year, reducing 173,893 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. The installation also incorporates advanced technologies such as mooring systems, wave breakers, and ballast anchors to ensure stability. Notably, it features the world’s largest inverter floating platform and covers 260 hectares of water area, setting a new global standard for floating solar technology.
Additionally, the project helps conserve 32.5 million cubic meters of water annually by reducing reservoir evaporation.
With this successful project, TPREL now boasts a total renewable energy capacity of 10.9 GW, with 5.6 GW of projects still under development. Its operational capacity has reached 5.3 GW, including 4.3 GW of solar and 1 GW of wind energy projects.
Tata Power is a major integrated power company and a part of the Tata Group, India’s largest multinational conglomerate. It has a diverse portfolio of 15.5 GW, covering all aspects of the power value chain—from energy generation to transmission, storage solutions, and solar cell manufacturing. Tata Power is also a leader in clean energy, with 6.7 GW of clean energy generation, representing 43% of its total capacity. The company is committed to achieving carbon neutrality before 2045.
On November 14, 2024, Tata Power share price opened at ₹401.95, touching the day’s high of ₹411.70, reflecting a rise of 2.80% as of 10:34 AM on NSE.
