Introduction

In a significant stride towards sustainable aviation, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Rolls-Royce have expanded their long-standing partnership to embark on a pioneering hydrogen research programme. This collaboration aims to address the critical challenges in hydrogen fuel system technology, promising a zero-carbon future for aviation.

The Vision for Sustainable Aviation

The collaboration between TCS and Rolls-Royce is driven by a shared vision of harnessing hydrogen as a viable zero-carbon fuel for aviation. Hydrogen fuel, with its potential to drastically reduce carbon emissions, represents a transformative opportunity for the aviation industry. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has set ambitious targets for net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, underscoring the urgency for innovative sustainability solutions.

Key Challenges in Hydrogen Fuel Technology

The journey to integrating hydrogen fuel systems in aviation involves overcoming several technical challenges. The research programme will focus on three critical areas:

  1. Fuel Combustion: Ensuring efficient and safe combustion of hydrogen in aircraft engines.
  2. Fuel Delivery: Developing robust delivery mechanisms to transport hydrogen fuel within the aircraft.
  3. Fuel Systems Integration: Integrating hydrogen fuel systems seamlessly with existing engine technologies.

These challenges must be addressed to ensure the safe and efficient use of hydrogen as an aviation fuel.

TCS’s Role in the Partnership

TCS, a global leader in IT services and consulting, brings its engineering expertise to the forefront of this collaboration. Leveraging its deep domain knowledge in the aircraft manufacturing industry, TCS will provide support in system design, component design, supply chain management, and program management. This partnership aligns with TCS’s broader mission to drive sustainable transformation across industries.

A Decade of Partnership

The collaboration builds on a decade-long relationship between TCS and Rolls-Royce, dating back to 2010. Over the years, TCS has supported Rolls-Royce in various areas, including design, manufacturing engineering, control systems, software development, and aftermarket services. This expanded partnership marks a pivotal next step in advancing hydrogen fuel technology for aviation.

Commitment to Sustainability

TCS’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its ambitious targets and achievements. In 2021, TCS set a target to reduce its absolute emissions by 70% across Scope 1 and Scope 2 by 2025, using 2016 as the baseline. By FY24, TCS had already exceeded this target, reducing its absolute carbon footprint by 80%. This achievement underscores TCS’s dedication to harnessing technology for positive societal impact and building a greener future.
