Several companies’ stocks have recently been added to the long-term Additional Surveillance Measure (ASM) framework by the NSE and BSE. This framework aims to monitor and regulate stocks displaying unusual price movements or heightened volatility, ensuring greater scrutiny to maintain market stability and safeguard investor interests.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and stock exchanges have introduced a series of pre-emptive short-term surveillance measures. These measures include the reduction of price bands, the implementation of periodic call auctions, and the transfer of securities to the Trade-for-Trade (TFT) segment.

These initiatives are designed to curb excessive volatility and promote transparency in trading activities. The inclusion of specific stocks in these measures aims to ensure a safer trading environment by closely monitoring unusual price movements or other market anomalies.

Among the latest additions to the list of securities under these enhanced surveillance measures are IDBI Bank, Vodafone Idea, Newgen Software, and 16 other companies. This development underscores the ongoing efforts by market regulators to maintain transparency and safeguard the interests of investors.

What is the Short-Term ASM Framework?

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has implemented the Short-Term Additional Surveillance Measure (ASM) framework, a system designed to monitor and regulate stocks experiencing short-term price volatility. This proactive measure aims to stabilise stock prices, protect investors, and promote market integrity.

How the ASM Framework Works?

The Short-Term ASM framework is triggered when a stock exhibits significant short-term price movements or unusual concentrations of trading volume. Once activated, the framework applies a staged approach to gradually introduce stricter measures to curb volatility and speculation.

Stocks under this framework are periodically reviewed to assess whether they should be moved to a lower stage of surveillance or removed from the framework entirely.

Measures Enforced Under the Framework

The ASM framework introduces several measures to stabilise stock prices and ensure investor safety:

  1. Increased Margin Requirements: Investors are required to maintain a higher percentage of collateral against their transactions, reducing speculative trading.
  2. Reduced Price Bands: The permissible price range for the stock is reduced to control excessive price movements within a trading session.
  3. Additional Obligations: Investors may be required to fulfil extra conditions to minimise volatility and speculation further.
