As per news reports, On December 20, 2024, the Government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed a $500 million loan agreement to bolster green and sustainable infrastructure projects. The loan, with a sovereign guarantee, will be extended to the India Infrastructure Finance Company Limited (IIFCL) to support projects aligned with India’s climate goals and net-zero commitments.

Boosting Infrastructure Financing through IIFCL

The partnership between ADB and IIFCL aims to provide long-term capital for infrastructure projects in key sectors such as connectivity, energy transition, urban development, education, and healthcare. With its expertise in risk mitigation and operational management, IIFCL will leverage private-sector investments to address funding gaps in under-resourced sectors. The project will also help IIFCL expand its product offerings to attract institutional investors and strengthen its role as a strategic development finance institution.

Integrating Sustainability in Infrastructure Development

The initiative includes the establishment of a sustainability unit and the development of an environmental sustainability framework and also a scoring system will be introduced for the assessment of the sustainability ratings of projects, ensuring adherence to green practices. These measures will enhance IIFCL’s capacity to support climate-aligned infrastructure, contributing significantly to India’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions.

Conclusion

The $500 million loan agreement between India and ADB underscores the critical role of sustainable financing in achieving climate goals. By empowering IIFCL with advanced tools and resources, this partnership is set to drive environmentally sustainable infrastructure development in India.
