Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has achieved a significant milestone with the successful commissioning of two units of the 6×170 MW Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project (PHEP-II) in Bhutan. This greenfield hydro project, located in the Wangdue district of Western Bhutan, is part of a bilateral agreement between the Government of India and the Royal Government of Bhutan.
The Francis Turbine installed in the PHEP-II project is engineered to operate at a rated head of 241 meters, the highest for any Francis-type hydro turbine in Bhutan. Once all six units are operational, the project is expected to generate 4,357 gigawatt-hours of power annually.
The company stated that Units 1 and 2 were successfully synchronised on December 16 and 17, 2024, respectively. A special ceremony commemorating Bhutan’s National Day was held at the project site on December 17, 2024, attended by His Excellency Lyonpo Gem Tshering, Bhutan’s Minister of Energy & Natural Resources and Chairman of PHPA-II.
BHEL’s scope of work for PHEP-II includes the design, manufacture, supply, installation, and commissioning of Electro-Mechanical systems. These systems include 6×170 MW Vertical Francis Turbines, Synchronous Generators, Control & Monitoring (SCADA) System, Generator Transformers and Shunt Reactor, Busduct, Pothead Yard, and Associated Auxiliaries.
The equipment was manufactured and supplied by BHEL’s units in Bhopal, Jhansi, Rudrapur, and Bengaluru. Erection and commissioning were handled by the company’s Power Sector-Eastern Region division based in Kolkata.
BHEL has a strong history of contributing to Bhutan’s energy projects, including the 4×84 MW Chukha, 4×15 MW Kurichhu, 6×170 MW Tala, and 4×180 MW Mangdechhu projects. With the commissioning of these two units at PHEP-II, BHEL’s contribution now accounts for nearly 89% of Bhutan’s total installed capacity.
Beyond Bhutan, BHEL is executing the 6×200 MW Punatsangchhu-I HEP, the 4×225 MW Arun-3 HEP, and the 2×20 MW Rahughat HEP in Nepal. Globally, BHEL has completed over 3.8 GW of hydro projects, with an additional 2.8 GW under execution, cementing its leadership in hydroelectric power solutions.
On January 9, 2025, BHEL share price opened at ₹223.85, touching the day’s low at ₹219.11, as of 10:01 AM on the NSE.
