Closing Bell: Nifty and Sensex Kickstart 2025 with Gains; Auto Stocks Lead on January 01

Both Sensex and Nifty50 ended higher on January 1, 2025. Auto stocks soared, while pharma and realty sectors lagged. Nifty Midcap and Smallcap also posted gains.

On Wednesday, January 1, 2025, the benchmark equity indices, BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50, started the new year with gains.

The 30-share Sensex rose by 368.40 points, or 0.47%, closing at 78,507.41. During the session, the index traded between 78,756.49 and 77,898.30. Similarly, the Nifty50 index gained 98.10 points, or 0.41%, to settle at 23,742.90. The index reached a high of 23,822.80 and a low of 23,562.80 during the day.

Top Gainers and Losers

Out of the 50 stocks in the Nifty50, 37 ended in the green. Maruti Suzuki India, Mahindra & Mahindra, Bajaj Finance, Larsen & Toubro, and Tata Motors were among the top gainers, with some seeing an increase of up to 3.01%.

On the other hand, 13 stocks in the Nifty50 ended in the red. Dr Reddy’s Labs, Hindalco, Adani Ports, ONGC, and Tata Steel were among the losers, with declines of up to 1.40%.

Broader Markets Show Positive Movement

The broader markets also mirrored the benchmarks, with the Nifty Midcap100 and Nifty Smallcap100 indices rising by 0.44% and 1.02%, respectively.

Sector Performance

Most sectoral indices on the NSE ended in the green, except for the Nifty Realty and Pharma indices. The auto sector was the top performer, with the Nifty Auto index climbing by 1.34%.

Oil Prices

As of January 01, 2025, at 03:35 PM, Brent Crude was trading at $74.64, up by 0.88%.
