The Ministry of Coal has reported a significant increase in coal production and dispatch for the first five months of the current fiscal year, 2024-25. This growth is indicative of the sector’s robust performance and its commitment to meeting the nation’s energy demands.
Overall coal production up to August 2024 reached a provisional figure of 384.08 million tonnes (MT), surpassing the previous year’s production of 360.71 MT during the same period. This represents a growth rate of 6.48%.
Coal India Limited (CIL), the country’s largest coal producer, contributed significantly to this growth. From April to August 2024, the company’s production rose to 290.39 MT, marking a 3.17% increase compared to the same period last year.
Captive and other coal-producing entities also played a crucial role in the overall production surge. Their combined output reached 68.99 MT during the April-August period, a substantial increase of 30.56% compared to the previous year.
The sector’s commitment to ensuring a steady supply of coal was also evident in the increased coal dispatch. Cumulative coal dispatch up to August 2024 stood at 412.07 MT, a growth of 5.14% compared to the same period last year.
CIL dispatched 309.98 MT of coal during the April-August period, a slight increase of 1.51% compared to the previous year. Captive and other entities also contributed to the increased dispatch, with their combined output reaching 76.95 MT, a growth of 31.48%. This growth highlights the sector’s enhanced logistical capabilities and its ability to meet the rising demand for coal.
Coal India Ltd is mainly engaged in mining and producing Coal and also operates Coal washeries. The company’s major consumers are the power and steel sectors. Consumers from other sectors include cement, fertilisers, brick kilns, etc.
