The Ministry of Coal has announced a substantial increase in coal production and dispatch during the first quarter (Q1) of the current financial year (FY25), spanning April 1, 2024, to June 30, 2024. These figures represent a significant improvement compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year (FY24).

Production Up by 35%, Dispatch Up by 34.25%

Overall coal production witnessed a remarkable 35% year-on-year (YoY) growth, rising from 29.26 Million Tonnes (MT) in Q1 FY24 to 39.53 MT in Q1 FY25. Dispatch figures mirrored this positive trend, with a 34.25% YoY increase, reaching 45.68 MT in Q1 FY25 compared to 34.07 MT in Q1 FY24.

Breakdown of Production and Dispatch Performance

  • Power Sector: Production for the power sector saw a robust 20.5% YoY increase, climbing from 25.02 MT in Q1 FY24 to 30.16 MT in Q1 FY25. Dispatch to the power sector also exhibited strong growth, rising 23.3% YoY, reaching 35.65 MT in Q1 FY25 from 28.90 MT in Q1 FY24.
  • Non-Regulated Sector (NRS): Production from the NRS witnessed a significant 77% YoY jump, increasing from 1.44 MT in Q1 FY24 to 2.55 MT in Q1 FY25. Dispatch to the NRS also grew considerably, reflecting a 43.4% YoY increase, with 2.38 MT dispatched in Q1 FY25 compared to 1.66 MT in Q1 FY24.
  • Sale of Coal: Production from sale of coal mines displayed impressive growth, surging 143% YoY. This translates to an increase from 2.80 MT in Q1 FY24 to 6.81 MT in Q1 FY25. Dispatch for sale of coal also saw a substantial rise, with a notable 117.67% YoY growth. Dispatch figures climbed from 3.51 MT in Q1 FY24 to 7.64 MT in Q1 FY25.
