The stock market remains open on October 29, 2024 (Dhanteras). The stock market holiday is on November 1 (Diwali), however it includes a special Muhurat Trading session. On October 29, several banks are closed in India.

Bank holidays and stock market holidays in 2024 are important to note to plan your financial activities. The festival of Diwali is all set to begin with Dhanteras on October 29, 2024, and will be observed widely across India. 

While it will be one of the bank holidays in 2024 in many cities, this does not extend to the stock market, as per the latest list of BSE and NSE stock market holidays. 

Both the BSE and the NSE will remain open on October 29, allowing regular trading on Dhanteras. Here’s a list of bank holidays and share market holidays for the rest of 2024, i.e., November and December. 

Diwali Bank Holidays in 2024

There are bank holidays in October 2024 for various events and festivals. 

Bank Holidays for Diwali 2024: On October 31, banks will be closed in several states, including Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Arunachal Pradesh, Kerala, Bihar, Mizoram, West Bengal, New Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana.

On November 1, banks will remain closed in Agartala (Tripura), Imphal (Manipur), Bengaluru (Karnataka), Jammu, Gangtok (Sikkim), Dehradun (Uttarakhand), Mumbai (Maharashtra), Nagpur (Maharashtra), Shillong (Meghalaya), and Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir). This holiday is observed across these states in observance of Diwali Amavasya (Laxmi Pujan)/Deepawali/Kannada Rajyothsava.

Bank holidays in October 2024 vary by state. Therefore, it’s advisable to contact your bank directly to confirm their working days for the year.

Diwali Muhurat Trading 2024

There is an official stock market holiday for Diwali scheduled for Friday, November 1, 2024. On this day, BSE and NSE will be closed for regular trading to mark the occasion of Diwali Laxmi Pujan. 

However, both exchanges will, however, hold a special 1-hour Muhurat Trading session, a tradition that signifies the start of the new Hindu Samvat year (Samvat 2081). During this session, investors can trade in equities, commodities, currency derivatives, equity futures and options, and securities lending and borrowing (SLB). This symbolic trading hour is observed with the belief that it brings prosperity and financial success to traders.

Overall, in November, the exchanges will be closed for trading for a total of 11 days, including weekends (Saturdays and Sundays) and 2 festival holidays occurring during the month.
